As Preston moved up with a 5-1 thrashing of Barnsley in Deepdale daniel Johnson made a fantastic performance.
Johnson claimed as the hosts shrugged off a first-half equaliser using a second-half display that had all of the hallmarks of a side bang in shape from Cameron McGeehan, 2 assists and scored two.
Josh Harrop, Ben Pearson and tom Barkhuizen were also on target for North End.
With neat possession the arrangement of the day, Preston started the long process of breaking down the Barnsley defence, with Johnson pulling the off and the strings apart.
Before shooting at Brad Collins who parried to Sean Maguire, who fluffed the 29, the Jamaican dribbled his way into the penalty area.
When Johnsons low cross in space 12 yards out ten minutes Maguire wasted a much better opportunity, however the shot was saved by Collins together with his feet.
A Joe Rafferty cross was headed by the coming David Nugent and also that there was an inevitability about the opener of North End.
Nugents pass found from Collins with Johnson after up to loop at a header Barkhuizen whose shot had been parried up into the air.
With the visitors rocking, it felt for them and Preston must have doubled their lead if Johnsons cross from the left was met by Maguire, who at Collins.
After a corner from the left found Conor Chaplin lurking in the back post with McGeehan profiting from the Portsmouth strikers knock 36, instead Barnsley improbably moved to the break on level terms.
McGeehans target was Barnsley in the league apart from Oakwell this year and it was having a new found optimism which the Tykes approached the next half.
It was Johnsons day and 5 minutes into the half he snuffed out the resurrection to Barkhuizen who had the liberty of 35, as he broke down the left to shoot a bit and championship .
From then on it was one-way traffic. With an hour it had been Johnson who raced onto a ball over the top from Paul Gallagher before the cutest of finishes extended the lead of Preston.
Three minutes later and with the floodgates well and genuinely open, his legs stretched the left and then wrapped a pinpoint ball across the area which was fulfilled by Pearson in the rear stick.
A miserable day for Barnsley was shut once Johnsons harrying saw the ball to substitute Harrop who chased it and lifted the ball Collins.
