Every year people wonder, when the playoffs come around ; will this be the year that Clayton Kershaw doesnt blow it in the playoffs? And at some point, he charges his team a shot at a World Series Championship and blows every year. So, once I watched Kershaw and the Dodgers in game last night as large favorites, my attention was caught by it.
And when I saw that around the opposing side of the starting pitching matchup, we had Stephen Strasburg starting, whos coming off his best regular season of his career and had an ERA of just .40 life in the playoffs, so I had been formally all in on the upset, and backed the Nationals at +141.
As I anticipated, because he got rocked for three runs in the first two innings and Kershaw did. He ended up hurling six innings and eventually settled down, however, the damage has been done, and the Nationals was able to hold onto the guide, and a significant underdog ticket was cashed by us. Strasburg pitched six innings on rest, allowing only one run on three hits and striking out ten along the way.
I am petrified of the awful Nationals bullpen, and we found which the Nationals were as they attracted Strasburg out of the bullpen instead of turning it . They did it again last night. After seeing him give up runs and bringing in Sean Doolittle, the Nationals brought in wild card starter Max Scherzer at the eighth inning on essentially no break. Scherzer mowed hitting out all 3 men he faced on fourteen pitches.
Scherzer is supposed to start game three, and at this point, it seems that the Nationals are going to ride their starters by using them out of the bullpen whether by starting them. The win for Washington was tremendous since they have stolen home-field advantage as well as Mad Max moving in game , theyve a great chance.
This past year we saw by using their bullpen basically all match, it is made by the Milwaukee Brewers all the way, and the Nationals do the opposite. It will be very interesting to observe how it works out to them. For todays pick, well return to the American League, in which the Houston Astros play with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Weve Got a pitchers duel on our hands in Houston since the Astros host the Rays in game two of the American League Divisional Series. The Astros took the series lead in game one. Verlander allowed only 1 hit and pitched seven shutout innings, along with the Astros won the match 6-2. Jose Altuve homered for Houston, and they will look to drive against Rays to the verge of elimination tonight.
Beginning for the Rays is last years Cy Young Award winner in the American League Blake Snell (6-8 4.29 ERA), and for the Astros its Gerrit Cole (20-5 2.50 ERA). The match complete over-under is set at seven and a half runs. The Astros are giant home favorites. First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 PM PST in Minute Maid Park in Houston.
In most years, Gerrit Cole would easily walk away with all the Cy Young Award. His twenty wins are second in the match, along with his 2.50 ERA is tops in the AL.. He also led the league in strikeouts. This guy had a year for the ages. However, teammate Justin Verlander was just as great, if not better, as Verlander threw a no-hitter, had wins (21) and led the league in WHIP (.80), while hitting 300 himself. Both men have been almost unhittable all year, and when there were any justice, then they would divide the award because they both certainly deserve it.
Cole really turned it on in the second half of the year because his ERA post-All-Star break has been a blink and you will miss it 1.79 in fourteen begins. He had 156 strikeouts in and two-thirds of an inning pitched. The Astros have lost only 3 matches with Cole about the mound since April! Houstons record over that span is 23-3. Cole has had twelve out of his thirteen and double handed strikeouts in nine starts.
Blake Snell was not looking like the man that won the Cy Young Award last year through the first months of the year. Throughout June, he was just 5-7 with a 4.97 ERA. He started to figure out things in July, however, as he was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three starts, prior to getting injured and lost nearly two full months. Snell rejoined the group in September, and theyve used him quite sparingly as he has pitched in three starts. If they want any shot the Rays will require a huge effort out of him tonight.
Look, this is a terrible number. The Astros are all great, and theyre going to win this collection. But to see them placing nearly -300 together with all the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, from a very gifted Rays group simply doesnt make any sense. Houston is going to win this match.
The Rays lineup had nothing to get Verlander yesterdayand I expect a performance tonight. So, while the Astros have been over-priced, I can not touch it as they are to win the game. But when I see the game total of seven and a half runs, I feel like the under offers price.
Cole will shut down the Rays, and I presume he is still really good, and I expect him to give a good performance tonight, even though Snell hasnt looked great lately. Both novices do not be shocked if they are in the match in the seventh inning or later, and will get into the match. And when they do turn things over to their bullpens, excellent results can be expected by you there as well as the Rays and Astros completed number three and number one in bullpen ERA this season.
Playoff baseball will be scoring, and this feels like a type of game. I will expect a pitchers duel and a low scoring game tonight. Give me the below seven and a half runs in game two from Houston!
