Andriy Yarmolenko: The inside story on his long journey back to fitness at West Ham

How altitude chambers, anti-gravity treadmills and dogged determination helped Andriy Yarmolenko recuperate from serious injury to turn into one of the Premier Leagues superstar players…
Andriy Yarmolenko is light the Premier League and has been instrumental in the increase of West Ham to fifth at the table.
His manager, Manuel Pellegrini, described him as aspecial player after he followed targets against Norwich and Manchester United with a refined finish against Bournemouth last weekend. He is carrying us at times, said team-mate Ryan Fredericks, who performs behind him to the perfect flank.
However, this shape has been hard fought for.
Because he tried to make a turn against Tottenham A little under 12 months Yarmolenko suffered a ruptured Achilles. Its a injury for a footballer. It was a blow. Just a couple of weeks after a move to West Ham and also the Premier League he was facing months on the sidelines.
Here, with the help of Richard Collinge, Head of Medical in West Hamwe tell the story of Yarmolenkos long battle back into fitness…
I believe you know right away whenever someone goes down with an injury like this, that it is a horrible one. Once we got in the pitch we understood he had been in a great deal of discomfort and the participant, in that scenario, is in a wonderful deal of shock.
While Yarmolenko clutched in his leg, the expression on the surface of his team-mates underlined the seriousness of their injury before Collinge and his staff arrived on the scene.
You dont see a ruptured Achilles that often, Collinge told Sky Sports. Ive been in and around soccer for 20 decades now and I believe I have seen 2 in my own career. They are rare but theyre big harms.
Aware of the gravity of this accident, the West Ham team knew they needed to act.
His wife was in the match, so we introduced her down to the medical room and explained the significance of the injury. Andriy was frustrated and surprised. Hed come to a new team in the Premier League and wished to earn a first impression. It was only October and opportunity was taken away from him.
We placed him into a protective boothe gave him crutches and sent him straight off for an MRI scan, which confirmed our fears hed ruptured his Achilles. With those ruptures that you need to operate as swiftly as possible. This was a Saturday and by first-thing Monday morning Andriy had undergone operation in London to repair the tendon.
After the whirlwind hours after the injury, Yarmolenko needed to face up to the prospect of many long months of healing work.
Following the surgery, Yarmolenkos wounded right leg was kept in a boot that just came off for light stretching exercises. During this slow period, his morale was equally as significant as his physical retrieval.
Watching the other players venture out coaching every day was difficult for him, explained Collinge. To get him during that first 10 week period following the injury, we had been trying to be very positive around him. Andriy is a character that is positive so that helped, however the manager the players and the training staff were excellent .
Weve got a player care team in the club also who ensured Andriy along with his family knew we were here as a staff and club to give him every support possible, from talking to a psychologist to attaining into staff hes used previously from the Ukraine. Theteam-behind-the-team ethic helped to get Andriy right back to where hes currently.
Collinge and the coaching staff were keen to maintain Yarmolenko as busy as possible to keep his ailment. There was gym work because of his upper body and to increase his heart rate and hydrotherapy to keep him in shape.
Yarmolenko was also set a set of targets. The most important thing Ive learnt through the years is you give the player realistic mark of the way the rehab programme will look and put them goals within that period of time, said Collinge. You have to be certain that the player buys into that.
Buy into it . You will find early starts and extended hours at the Rush Green training base of West Ham but the mindset of Yarmolenko remained steadfast. Even at the seasons conclusion, when his team-mates had gone off on holiday, Yarmolenko still came daily to continue his struggle back center.
His remedy was wide-ranging and employed technology. In an altitude room, Yarmolenko rode inactive bikes, exercised to a cross-trainer and conducted on an anti-gravity treadmill.
Andriy was doing work at a simulated environment of 3000m elevation, explained Collinge. He worked his heart and lungs harder, hence when he return to this pitch his fitness wasnt depleted too far. Hed do high-intensity work on the bicycle as well as from December, we gradually increased the weight his own body was bearing as he ran on the treadmill.
Routine weigh-ins and body fat checks monitored Yarmolenkos condition, meetings with all the club nutritionist tweaked his dietwhile massage and muscle stimulators assisted fortify muscles around the healing Achilles.
Following a morning at the altitude chamber, additional work with the strength and conditioning trainers followed in the day and weekly Pilates courses helped with versatility.
Every player wants to get back as speedily as you can and we want to facilitate that safely, explained Collinge. Altitude chambers, cryotherapy chambers, muscle stimulators, shockwave machines, you can name it, there is a whole great deal of info and gear on the market. Were always trying to locate these benefits to acquire the player back on the pitch faster and more powerful and in a better way.
West Ham manager Pellegrini kept a close watch on the procedure. Yarmolenko might have been ruled out for the season but, just like all injured players in the center, Pellegrini insisted on him still being included in team meetings and made to feel part of this group.
Mr Pellegrini likes to be aware of what is happening with all the players that are injured, said Collinge. I meet with him every single morning and talk through each participant, whether they are fit or not. The manager also sees the gamers at the treatment space, he will come in and ask how they are getting on.
He keeps communication open with players that are injured since the player needs to feel a part of this club and concerned. Mr Pellegrini and his team are great at doing this. The gamers do not feel left out or moved to the side because they are hurt
Yarmolenkos work on the treadmill improved his strength during December and come January he was ready to get back to running on grass.
The approach was slow, steady, systematic. Straight line running evolved to agility work and by April he was able to combine with his team-mates for some non-contact sessions before, eventually, in May, touch coaching. But that was not the end of the street.
When you place a player back to contact sessions, you need to build up his confidence, explained Collinge. Theres nothing like training to achieve that. Theres just so much we could perform in a rehab setting before you unleash the player into a full-contact session also he must be exposed to the stresses and strains which training exerts on that sidewalk.
Yarmolenko responded well and, had the Premier League season stretched into June, hed have been back in action for West Ham. But given the time of his recovery, Pellegrini along with the medical staff agreed it would be best place to bet online to go simple and ensure Yarmolenko had been 100 per cent for July 1, the beginning of pre-season.
That meant that, together with West Hams first team heading off to their vacations after achieving a top-half finish in the league, Yarmolenko had to discover others to train .
We kept an U23s training team back later especially to help Andriy, so that he can do extra training with them, explained Collinge. He went back to Ukraine and also did a little coaching with the national team, though we had been very much controlling that training to be sure he did not do too much too soon.
Together with his own holidays reduced to a brief break along with his family, Yarmolenkos summertime continued to concentrate on his rehab.
Theyre the sacrifices you need to make, said Collinge. People think the season finishes mid-May, but certainly for the medical staff, the sports science group that we offer a service throughout the summer and Andriy was responsible for the majority of the summer
After July 1 came Yarmolenko was ready for activity – and now he is reaping the rewards for all his hard work.
The rehabilitation shouldnt be taken lightly because its a procedure which takes an awful lot of buy-in, and it is testament to Andriy he came through it so well, explained Collinge. It takes a huge amount of psychological robustness and positivity to get back playing that level again.
The difficult work still lasts. We dont become complacent. The Premier Leagues demands are enormous these days, emotionally and physically, and when a player enjoy Andriy has been injured they will need to do keeps him.
But hes a good professional. Hes been a sponge within the last 12 months and carried on board the information my team have handed him and it is incredibly satisfying to watch him back, playing how hes.
