When most folks were sleeping, former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor put out a tweet stating that he has retired from MMA. Below is the quote from his tweet:
“Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the game officially known as”Mixed Martial Art” today. I wish of my coworkers that are old well going forward in contest. I join my former spouses on this venture, currently. Suitable Pina Coladas on me fellas!”
At first glance, it’s hard to take McGregor seriously. In the end, this is not the first time he has said he’s retired from MMA. The other time he tweeted something similar came after he was submitted by Nate Diaz at a shocker in UFC 196. Only a few months after tweeting that, he was back at the cage, winning a vast majority decision over Diaz in UFC 202. So whenever McGregor tweets some thing about retiring from MMA, then you need to keep in mind he’s pulled this stunt before.
At second glance, however, there might be something more to this. After all, McGregor does not need MMA. It is only a matter of whether he has that burning passion to step in the cage, because as far as finances go, he’s set for life. The Floyd Mayweather boxing superfight in 2017 made McGregor up of $100 million, and that monetary windfall help set him up for success using Suitable 12 whiskey. McGregor doesn’t really truly”need” MMA anymore. But he is a rival, and he likely does not wish to venture out on a catastrophic submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in UFC 229 in his last bout, not to mention all of the shenanigans that went along with it.
If anything, this could be a tactic by McGregor. It’s smart for McGregor to capture the attention of MMA fans and press. He hasn’t even fought in nearly a year and yet remains talked about more than almost any other fighter. He’s clearly a very wise man. The UFC has had talks with McGregor about returning at UFC 239 in a co-main event fight against Nate Diaz, but McGregor has been adamant he wants to fight in the main event, and it seems that is at the crux of his own beef with UFC president Dana White and co.. This could be McGregor posturing and trying to get the UFC to call his bluff, but it remains to be seen.
Without McGregor, the UFC will need to proceed and reserve UFC 239 without him as a potential fight. The rumors are that the UFC would like to do Daniel Cormier against Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title in the main event, and there are lots of different options for the card for example Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington for the UFC welterweight title. Just as the fans want to view McGregor come back and fight someone like Diaz, as far as it appears like the promotion needs McGregor, they really don’t, along with the UFC’s well-oiled machine will continue to move forwards with or without the Irish celebrity.
