Dwyane Wade dance with all the Heat will not help them escape the midsection of the NBA. Judging by what’s coming back to the roster, neither will the first season of the era.
Miami has been hungry for celebrity power in recent years, sending just two agents to the All-Star Game over the past 3 seasons–just as an injury replacement (Goran Dragic), the other on a special invitation from the commissioner (Wade). Even though Josh Richardson, Justise Winslow and Bam Adebayo have all taken steps ahead this season, none has consistently displayed elite possible.
This group has too much ability to bottom out, and that type of rebuild doesn’t appeal president Pat Riley anyway. The Heat are loose with their draft picks during his tenure, hence the reason they’re outside a future and four of their next five second-rounders.
But if the draft does not deliver a star, it’s hard to tell which path this franchise may take. There is no real spending money until 2020, and trade processors come few and far between, provided the number of bloated contracts are on the books.
