New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees says operation on his thumb harm was a success and is expected to miss.
The Saints are beginning a stretch of matches to Seattle on Sunday without quarterback Brees using the trip because the Seahawks look to continue their very best start since their Super Bowl championship season.
Teddy Bridgewater is anticipated to start for New Orleans in place of Brees, but Saints coach Sean Payton has yet to name a rookie.
Brees’ injury – a ligament in his throwing thumb, sustained in a 27-9 loss in the Los Angeles Rams – begs the obvious question of if the Saints are developed to withstand the absence of the NFL’s all time leading passer.
“We are getting prepared to find out,” Saints boss Payton said when asked that question.
Bridgewater completed 17 of 30 passes for 165 yards after replacing Brees.
The Saints hope when he earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 before a severe knee injury the subsequent preseason put him 32, he can recapture the form he had in Minnesota again.
“We’ve 53 individuals on our staff. Drew is a huge portion of this,” New Orleans defensive end Cameron Jordan stated.
“You can’t replace Drew, however at the exact identical time we do not know precisely what Teddy brings to the table. It has been [over] two decades because he has had an entire Pro Bowl year that he had over in Minnesota.
“At this stage, I can not tell you whether we can defy without Drew.”
Payton wouldn’t confirm whether Bridgewater would start, rather suggesting that Taysom Hill can also be in the combination.
Hill and an assortment of positions on offense and special teams play and has replaced Brees on event at quarterback, particularly when Payton goes with a run-pass option.
Brees’ lack was not the difficulty that the Saints needed in Los Angeles at the rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game.
Their line has been defeated consistently and the staff rushed for 57 yards on 20 carries. New Orleans were penalised 11 days for 87 yards.
The Seahawks want to cut down on their penalties. They have been penalised 18 occasions, including 10 for 93 from the Pittsburgh Steelers a week.
If they continue to perform close matches, prevailing at Pittsburgh by 2 and having beaten the Cincinnati Bengals, the rash of penalties could prove costly.
“Our hands’ve to get cleaner,” coach Pete Carroll said. “That’s just being littered with their palms, and we have to do better. We’re not there yet, we are not on it .
“Our conscience is not right about it, and I am hoping this hit tough enough this week. I am hoping the courses are powerful enough that we can create an impression on these guys.
“We have got to do it. We’re a good third-down team.
“Everything , we stink, and that’s likely to continue to be difficult and people happen due to sacks or due to penalties and we’re getting third and fifteens and stuff. We have to clean that up.”
Meanwhile, the Seahawks don’t have some quarterback concerns as they were directed by Russell Wilson to their first 2-0 start.
Wilson used his arm and his legs at Pittsburgh a 28-26 victory that was key last Sunday, a week after Seattle opened with a one-point triumph against Cincinnati home.
Against the Steelers, he finished 29 of 35 passes. He also scrambled three times to keep alive a clinching drive that consumed the final 5:34 of this match.
“It’s tough to imagine that someone will keep getting better once you are in year eight,” Carroll informed SeattlePI.com. “How can this happen? Nevertheless, it is. We’re watching it.”
